Now that I (and all the other outbound students) found out my country assignment, the real planning begins. We met with a travel agency that deals specifically with Rotary Exchange. They'll help us find our plane tickets, travel itinerary, and help us receive visas or student residence permits for our host country. With Rotary program, I will be applying for a student residence permit and will go to the Danish Consulate in New York City around May or June time. I am excited about going to my host country and am ready to leave in August!
Another thing I am focusing on is learning Danish. Although Denmark Rotary Youth Exchange has a two week language camp when we arrive, I plan on learning as much as possible before leaving! Danish seems like a difficult language to learn, but it's not difficult to pick up on. Danish and English both have Germanic roots. I checked out A LOT of books from the library about Danish and also books about Denmark in general! Below are some of the books I checked out:

Below is another pictures of carnations in the Danish flag colors. The Rotarian who encouraged me to sign up for the program and helped me with all the application things got them for me when I told him where I was going. All his daughters went on exchange programs and one actually lived in Denmark for the summer!
The final bit of news I found out is my Host District. My sponsoring district told me I might not find out where I'll be or who my host district is for a while, but about a week ago I received an e-mail from my host district, 1470, and am absolutely thrilled about this news! The district spans from Copenhagen, suburbs and the surrounding area of Copenhagen, and an island called Bornholm. It is likely I'll be living in one of these three places!
That's it for now, I hope to update more often with any bits of news or information I think is worthwhile sharing to my blog.
Farvel!
Sophie
